FOSTERING SUBREGIONAL TRADE: INSIGHTS FROM ASA NIAGA BARTER TRADE PORT

On 6 February 2025, a delegation from the Centre for IMT-GT Subregional Cooperation (CIMT), led by Mr. Amri Bukhairi Bakhtiar, Director of CIMT, together with a delegation from the State Government of Negeri Sembilan led by Dato’ Muhamad Nahar bin Mohd Sidek, Deputy State Secretary (Development) of Negeri Sembilan, conducted a site visit to the Asa Niaga Barter Trade Port complex in Port Klang, Malaysia. ASA Group, the owner-operator of the Asa Niaga Barter Trade Port, organised and hosted the site visit. The visit included briefings and a tour of the port facility complex by Dato’ Shaari Mat Jihin, founder and executive chairman of ASA Group.

This visit aligns with Negeri Sembilan’s aspiration to explore opportunities in the IMT-GT subregion to boost trade and investment. Discussions highlighted the potential for developing a barter trade port in Negeri Sembilan, to enhance trade relations within the subregion, supporting IMT-GT’s broader goals of fostering economic connectivity and exploring innovative trade mechanisms. The Asa Niaga Barter Trade Port, which has been in operation since 1997, was suggested as one of the models Negeri Sembilan can replicate when developing a barter trade facility in the state. This engagement reflects a strong commitment to fostering cross-border economic activities and building impactful partnerships within the IMT-GT subregion.
